How
does this compare to cable & DSL?
Fiber optics uses light to send information instead of electricity.
This is why we say it's "lightning fast". With a 100 MB
connection it makes fiber optics 75-100 times faster than 1 MB cable
and 300 times as fast as DSL.
Do
I need expensive equipment to get setup?
The answer is "NO". All you need is a network card. If
you currently have a network setup, fiber optics will easily integrate.
There is no need to purchase additional equipment or expensive hardware
to increase your network connectivity.
How
many computers can I hook up to it?
With Fiber optics you can have as many computers as you want connected
to the Internet. Also, there is no additional charge for every machine.
It's just one simple flat rate.
How
much is a Gigabyte?
The simple answer in relation to the Internet is a lot. To break
it down, a Gigabyte (GB) is a thousand megabytes and there are a
thousand kilobytes in a megabyte. Te average picture on the Internet
is 6 Kilobytes and your favorite song in MP3 is about 1.2 Megabytes.
A CD can hold 700 Megabytes so one Gigabyte is about 800 music songs.
That's a big jukebox.
Is
Fiber just for the Internet?
Right now the only service be carried over the fiber
network is Internet. Once more people get networked on the fiber
you'll see cable and telephone services all being delivered through
the same pipe.
